Mike,

Regarding Face book...yes my name is on that site, BUT NOT my "real" signature name, at least the first name...that being said, I CAN set my account up as to "whom sees my information", unlike the NTBA site.

The "real name" usage was my issue on this site from the git-go. I belong to many different websites and this was the ONLY one that required one use their REAL name as a user name. This is the main reason I remained away from the new NTBA site. Then one day I received an email from a member who told me to go on the NTBA site, register and see what happens...and VOILA! I no longer had to plug in my REAL name for the user name...

I do understand the powers to be are making corrections to make this site more user friendly, but I can tell you that this site is the VERY SAME as all the other websites I belong to....except for the "user name" thingy...but now that's been changed so I'm a very happy camper.

I feel, and Rolla...this is only MY opinion, that when the change was made where we could use our "handles" instead of the real names...then it should have been duly noted here on the website and not allow the wordage to remain the same. Given the fact that the instruction wordage reads "use first name and last name" (or words to that effect), of course that's what the registerer is going to do, however if given the instruction to "choose" either your REAL name or Handle.....I would think most folks would use their handle. WHEW!!! And I was just wanting to make a brief reply to Tub-T.

I personally think the "real name" rule is a good idea on most forums. It keeps down a lot of the ugly, if you know what I mean. And it was required on most CompuServe forums, back in the day.

You know I can find a person's name, social security number, birthday, etc., without too much difficulty, if I want to. If you have a friend in law enforcement, you can get the driver's license number, too. The "handle" practice really doesn't protect you much.

I remember back in the day on CB radios everyone used a handle (shortstack) so the FCC could not "see" you, but that did not stop them if they wanted to find you..............With google it and with a bit of work, anyone that has been on the internet can found......................even on Facebook...........

Only the MOST unscrupulous person will go to that extent. I had the threat of identity theft in July and I have paid "good" money to have at least 99% of my personal info removed from cyber space. I can tell you this, unless that supposed law enforcement friend of yours wants to lose their job, they cannot giv e out that information to the average person on the street. I KNOW because I attempted to do that a few years back when I had a very good friend on the Appleton, WI. police force.

Regarding g=obtaining someone's personal info...sure you can get it or most of it, but do you really want to pay anywhere from $30 on up the scale? Yeah, you can get a little bit for about $3.95, but they will bait you.

I don't know what the deal is...if we prefer to have "handles" such as on the old site...why not on here as well? As I said, I don't really care what you or anyone else wants to give out to the general public....all I know is that I will NOT advertise anymore about me than I feel is necessary. The officers have my "real" name and if they want to know anything else, all they have to do is ask. That goes for anyone else whom "I deem as a friend."

I know a lot of people in our "family" by their handle and even a few by thier real name. I know more about who's doing what when handles are used.
Gotta love it!

My point EXACTLY Al. I sort of recall, I "think" it was the KC Nationals when the name tags they used had member's "real" names. Well heck, I only knew folks by their handles, not their actual names. I kept having to ask those I met: "just who are you?" It was quite awkward, at least for me.

Hope you and Shirley are getting along better now Al.

I VOTE: REPLACE ALL "REAL NAMES" WITH "HANDLES"----- I truly believe that (along with the "pain in the ass" registration process) irritated enough of the "Old Timers" to the point that they just said, "to hell with it". I know, that thought crossed my mind!

We had a system that worked--OK, maybe not the most modern, up to date, state of the art web site but--IT WORKED! This board works too---but so did the OLD ONE!!

As far as getting new members to join----who the hell would want to if they had to deal with this----But ---as a new member----they would not know about "what used to be"

But I guess that we are not having a vote----OH WELL.

I99-071 ---suffering from entirely toooooo much hurry cane!

Just my $ .02 worth------for what ever THAT'S worth!
