stall speed converters

hey guys, im still in the planning stages and am looking into motors, i want to put a nice strong motor and some tell me i need a stall speed converter, others tell me i dont, my engine will have a decent power band but mainly from off idle to mid range. some tell me the idle will b slow and i will b ok, others tell me the car is lightweight and i will need one. some people mention stall speed like its taboo or something, so im asking you guys, (the experts) to help me out, if i put a 350ci engine rebuilt with a stroker kit, a light cam nothing too big, im gonna have the big mickey thompson tires, and still not sure about the gears, but probably 370 range, TH350 trans, the tires are 32"s tall and 17"s of tread. so, million dollar ? do i need a stall speed converter and if so, what speed? i welcome any replies, i'd like some advice, thanks

2800 - 3000 stall will work. That is what I had, no problems. Be sure to use a good trany cooler.

i am trying to learn about this, if i am cruising on hwy at 65 and only turning bout 2200 or 2500, will it start slipping cause its below the stall speed or once it takes off and locks does it stay locked? your opinion please!

its a very good idea to put in a stall...factory stall's are around 1500 rpm in a car/truck thats 3000 #, the lighter the car the EASIER it is to get it moving. so keeping a 1500 in u will have both feet on the brake cause it wants to go NOW. a stall will allow a good idle and light foot on brake. i used a 2400 stall and i feel thats a bottom rpm stall, u would be better in the upper 2000 rpm bracket. these cars are light and don't take much to get them started.

With a TH350 and 373 gears, at 65 mph, you will be turning approx 2800 rpm. I have this same running gear. My stall converter is a 2500-2800 and works OK. No slipping at highway speeds. However, if I ever pull the eng, a 3000 stall converter will go in.

Mr Jim, what type of motor do you have? and with that gearing on hwy at 65, can you give me some idea of gas milage you get, i realize this is for fun and not economy but just trying to get some idea, i will only b able to have a 10 gallon tank, thanks

My engine is a BUILT 327 with two 500 cfm carbs. Approx 418 hp. Not really sure what I get at 65mph but overall I'm getting 12-14 mpg. Carbs are set-up with progressive linkage so most of the time I'm only running on one.

thanks mr jim, im leaning towards a 383 stroker motor, suppose to have about 400-420 hp, i will b using one 750cfm carb, i want to have fun but i want to get more than 4 or 5 mph LOL i appreciate your help, im planning on being in ocala, i hope to meet a few of you guys there.
