SBC Vortec heads

Post by cecil misner »

So, is it good or bad thinking to install stock Vortec heads on a 406 SBC?

The stock Vortecs flow great, esp, below 5,500 RPM; the achilles heel for the stockers is the limitations on gross valve lift - no more than .470 with 1.5 ratio rocker arms, but this is fine for most street engines. You can machine the valve guides yourself with a neat little tool sold by Comp Cams, to allow higher lifts and 1.6 ratio rockers. This will give you more HP above 5,500 RPMs, as you move to a bigger cam and stronger springs. The 64 cc combustion chambers on the stock Vortecs will also give you a nice 9.5+ compression ratio with dished pistons, and the price is right! Right out of the box they flow better than the old double hump heads that everyone tries to find.

Hi Spanky, This 406 is for my GMC (the one I drove to Hannibal) that I am modernizing. My Bucket Buddy, Fred, from Belfair, WA gave me a complete Vortec 350, the 400, and a Mopar front axle in trade for 2 carburators. I had the pistons and rings on hand for a .030 overbore on the 400. So, I have a 406 short block ready. The 400 heads are to far gone to overhaul. So, I think I'd like to put the Vortec heads on the 400. I can drill the steam holes on my drill press and then a pretty much stock overhaul on the heads. Also, I think the center bolt valve covers look kinda trick.

You say?? Ceec

Ceeeeeec - I think you'll love the Vortecs on your 400 block. Just remember, the combustion chambers are 64 cc, and if the pistons are domed at all, you could be at a pretty high compression ratio. Just a thought . . . I say go for it!! :)!

Also, be aware that the Vortecs will require a special intake manifold designed to correspond to the Vortec's different bolt pattern/angles. E-bay may help you there. ;)

Thanks Bill, The pistons are SpeedPro forged dished.

Great! You should get around 9.5:1 compression which should serve you well on a street engine. Let me know how it turns out! :)

Likewise, Ceec. I think the last time we were together face-to-face was in Hannibal, MO! Seems like yesterday . . . :?
