Oil filter adapter Chevy 283

Post by fiesta »

I am having problems with my oil filter adapter for my 283. When I went from the canister to the screw on filter it leaks when the engine is running. I tightened the filter finger tight plus 1/4 turn no help. I keep adding 1/4 turn on the tightness and doesn't change. Since the adapter is a cast part I wonder if it bad , has anyone else run into this problem.

Years ago, I had this problem. Turned out that the o-ring on the old filter stuck to the engine. So I had two o-rings, between the new filter and the engine, which would not seal properly.

Did you get the right adapter, there are two. One for 1956-1967 and then
another for 1968-1990.

.
If it's this later adapter, I like to lightly rub a file across the rib that seals against
the block until there are no nicks. You have to hold it perfectly flat while filing.

Oh Hell, this stupid software will NOT put the photos in like it should, even thou I put them inline !!!!!

Just as a flash back...the early filter apapt. used a ford spin on filter , because Chevy didn't make one yet .....
