Front Spring Disassembly

Several of the teflon disks in my front leaf spring have migrated out. Thanks to Isaac, I have replacement disks.

What is the safest way to disassemble the spring to replace the disks?

Take weight off chassis...jack it up place on jack stands. Slowly back bolt out. Clean the leafs up and reinsert the Teflon disks. I WAS at one point going to go with the disc, but instead opted for the Leaf Spring Liner with Lip, 2 Inch. Haven't had to concern myself with them slipping out or as you say, migrating out. In fact the liners have been in place since 2001...that was 17 years ago...just saying, you might want to go that route...just saying.

Mark you may want to have a new center bolt on hand so you don't have to try to clamp the spring back together so the old bolt will fit.....That is probably a 3/8" bolt about 6 inches long.... when it is back in position cut off the extra bolt and you should be good to go......

Sorry for delay Mark...been busy. YES to all three bolts. What you might want to do is get two vice grips and wrap a rag around each end of the springs just to hold them together as you are removing the bolts...that way they won't SPRING on you! Don't ask me how I know this. Also upon assembly, apply the vice grips again...don't ask me how I discovered this either.

I got the liner from Speedway Motors. Like I "think" I stated, the discs WILL squeeze out and you'll be taking it apart again. Get the liner and call it a day, a month , a year, a decade......

just a suggestion, I would use large clamp instead of vise grips. this way you can control the springs better and slowly release the tension on them

Very good suggestion Paul. Actually for lack of the correct word, vice grips first came to mind, and my mind is lucky these days if it is even operating.

STILL though Mark, wrap a nice NEW rag around that leaf spring so as not to mar it.

I clamp up by the bolts. then when the bolt is out loosen the clamp trying to do both at the same time. it will not spring a lot, just want to be safe. also get a long bolt that fits thru the spring that way when you stack them together you can clamp them together and keep the holes lined up. Mark just go for it.
