I am building my headers. The tube/pipe comes out of the exhaust port on the engine and extends about 14 inches. At that point I have the pipes cut about 2 inches back with a half circle of pipe on the top and nothing on the bottom. I have a steel plate across the pipes as a blocker, forcing the exhaust down. I am fabricating out of sheet metal a 'box' that covers the whole ends so you do not see the cut ends, just a nice looking box. I want to stuff the box with something to muffle and limit the exhaust smell. I think in the old days they used something like fiberglass. If fiberglass, where do you find the high temp stuff?
If not fiberglass, what else is there to use?

Bob, fiberglass won't hold up to the heat. My muffler inserts are wrapped in stainless steel wool. Regular steel wool will rust out almost instantly... you want stainless steel wool. Here is one possible source...
