Removable dash?

I have a removable dash made from 1/4" luan. I would like something else that would be similarly lightweight, but also not splinter when using my hole say for the gauges and what-not. I thought about using some thin (1/16 inch) steel I have, but not sure that would be a good idea.

Any ideas?

Use a piece of stainless and do a polish/ or whatever to it. Can't think of what it's called this minute. Ask Mike.

I think Bruce means 'engine turning' or 'Damascening' and Mike Wade has a video on this web site.
edit:(Actually, damascening is another metal decorating process involving inlays - my bad! )

"Engine Turn" that is what it is called. I would use a 1/8 or 1/4 piece of Alum. then decide how much shiny I wanted. some or none...….Take some steel wool and buff it a little. Just so it looks good.....

What kind of pad doing the turning? I've got a bunch of them I use with my die grinders.

Frank Let me look to see if I can find my crude engine turning set up. I use my small drill press and some Roloc pads.....

Very nice Mike. All I want to do is my dash. I'll experiment with some of my wide variety of Rolocs on my big multi-speed floor mount drill press to figure this out. Will check on the price of a piece of aluminum big enough to do the dash, and see when I can get one. Thanks man.

Yes Frank I do this on smaller pieces all the time. These were done for the Firewall & the Dash & the bed cover so I set it up this way.....I just did one for the "C"edan I am building now...….
