The name of the ship is the Polar Star from Seattle, WA.
The ice they were breaking was 6-8 foot thick for about 21 miles ( out to the ice edge ) but the ship can do 21 feet of solid ice!
75,000 horsepower, 3- sixteen foot diameter props producing 25,000 HP each.
The pier is a manmade floating Ice Cube, it is about 15 foot thick. Reinforced with about 3 miles of steel cable zig-zaging through the layers as they build. also has a bridge to access it when the supply ship ( Ocean Giant ) comes in this weekend.
The dirt on top is actually volcanic rock spread to about 18” to insulate the ice.
This morning we will be landing a research vessel coming in from around Chile.

wow that ship is an animal. 6 to 8 ft of ice.. does that mean it's cold down there.. in the 20's here last nite. brrrrrrrrrr So i know what u mean..

Hey Windy , it looks like you're checking out that 6" stainless steel plate you welded to the bottom of that ship last night. Har Har. I will agree with DB that thing is an animal!
