Poking a distributor
A long time ago, someone made a posting on poking a distributor in an engine. It made sense and I went looking for it. I thought it was in the tech pages - no, tech Q&A - no. Anyone remember the posting or the procedure? 
I hate sticking them in. I'm thinking of buying a Joe Hunt HEI magneto look alike distributor.

I can get ya started on the process.
Are you replacing an existing Dizy? If so, put some break in lube on the gear and note which direction the rotor on the "original" dizy is pointing BEFORE you remove it from the engine. After removing the old dizy DO NOT turn the engine and install the new dizy with the new rotor pointing in EXACTLY the same direction as the "old" dizy. Lightly clamp it to the block. Do not clamp it so tightly that you can not rotate the dizy to set the timing. Hook up your timing light and fire it up, check timing and set to your engines specks. Tighten the clamp.
If the engine has been "turned over" you must set the number one cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke and install the dizy with the rotor pointing to the #! pole on the dizy cap. #1 pole on the dizy cap is where ever you want it to be - your choice. On a small block Chevy this is USUALLY on a line between the center of the dizy shaft and the right front wheel (not always, again , your choice). YOU WILL have to fiddle with the oil pump shaft (use a long screwdriver) to get the tang on the dizy shaft to align with the slot in the shaft!!!! You will have to play with your spark advance but it will start and you can correct the timing with your timing light!
This will get you started - I HOPE!
You can also google "installing a distributor" and there are a LOT of better descriptions than what I have just shared!
