Rack & Pinion Steering

ok I went on e-bay and typed cross steer half rack and a bunch show up. once I got it I took the mounting bracket off because that is designed to replace a vega steering box

Then cut off the old covair steering box mount

I do not have a lot of picture of this, but what I did was take a piece of the same tube the frame is made of and cut it to make an angle. then I made a mounting plate and tacked it in place a few time to get it at the correct angle and in the correct place so the drag link was parallel to the radius rods, and the u-joints would turn.

had drag link cut to size and tapped. then bolted everything back on and now it steers like a go-kart. hope this helps

Does it improve the steering ratio, ie. number of turns lock-to-lock, or just the "feel?"

I not sure about lock to lock but there is no play in the steering. when you turn the steering wheel you are turning.

Use Paul's photos because the end results is about the same...…..He had to remove the Corvair mount because it was on top of the frame......In my case I used the old mount to hold the Hiem Joint that supports the u joints because it was on the inside of the frame...…….All of these are just a bit different but the results are the same...….

Now lock to lock is not much different from Corvair but you do have a shorter turning radis going to the left but like Paul says it will go where you are pointing the car...…..Try it you will love it....

Toolman provided some guidance and some very informative photos. So I am still on track to make the conversion this winter.

I did see on FB where some guys were saying that the turning radius is larger with the half rack. What has been your experience?

Any other pitfalls that I need to watch out for?

Mine is slightly larger but caues no issues, doing a quick U turn just takes a little more room
