What type of Wood

Ok, so I'm slowly working through the process of cleaning up my Dad's old T. Currently it has a piece of wood that I'm told was someone's table top before it was cut and placed on the T. I'm looking for ideas of what type of wood to use on the rear deck. I want it to look really nice and not just be an everyday piece of wood. I have had some folks suggest diamond plate but I don't think that fits with the appearance of this T.

I put diamond plate on mine, but it's holding two 1/2 keg gas tanks. Can't find a pic quick, and too much to do!

Here's what's on it now. Reportedly it was the kitchen table from the man who built the car in the early 70's.

Diamond plate was suggested but I don't think that fits this T.

If you're not dead-set on having a wood bed cover, why not a nice black fiberglass one? To me it fits the style of the rest of the car.

The wood looks nice. Keep it and refinish or have it upholstered to match interior. JMTCW

The wood appears to be either face cut maple or birch, with a light fruitwood stain.
