Ideal Trailer

Post by Big Bill »

Gentleman I have been reading the posts on trailers and thought I would throw out what I have learned after fifty + years of towing trailers. First of all I have a Class A CDL with all endorsements. Now the ideal trailer would be 200 feet long and have three bedrooms, two baths, a family room, and room to haul three cars and an entire workshop with central air and heat. Wow I almost forgot the hot tub and sun deck. Now the only problem I have is I want to pull this with my 1972 Pinto 4 cyl. automatic.
Guys I understand wanting the biggest and best out there but please consider all the facts before you buy. The longer, wider, taller, and heavier a trailer is the larger , stronger tow vehicle it takes to pull it. Which leads to higher fuel cost, more expensive maintance, and the greater skills it takes to tow it across a narrow twisty road through a stretch of mountains, or in heavy city traffic, or on the interstate with a fifty mile per hour cross wind. Also do you have someone else that can drive it if you get hurt or sick while on a trip. Another thing to consider is zoning where you live, can you park it at home or do you have to rent a storage space for it when not in use. Can you even back it in your driveway to load or unload it.
I am not saying to not buy a huge trailer with all the trimings, I'm just wanting you to consider what you are buying and will it be usable for you or will it be a total nightmare. I have read many post about not going to the nats in a given location do to fuel cost or road conditions to get there. Make sure you select a combination you can enjoy and use. Happy Trailering
Been there, done that, hope to live long enough to do it all again.

How about a 22' trailer that is a two car trailer? With workshop and lift. I like 22' trailers because they fit in any parking space that is 2 spaces long with the tow vehicle. I almost bought one, but as Ron advised, make sure your tow vehicle is up to the task. I have a Ford 4X4 diesel Excursion, and at 8000 lbs, I would consider towing this one..........

Bob the wind drag on that would be awful. Do you think it would be top heavy with the car in the top?

It is a vee nose, and I would have my 1790 lb T on top of course, and some Detroit Iron on the bottom.

Bob, before buying the one I have now I actually looked at a few of those rascals. The option of having a mobile work shop with the lift and shorter load was VERY appealing to me. Not so sure that when i finally buy a motor home that I may move that direction. I agree with Big Bill.

Folks need to REALLY think about what they want long term and WHY... I started with an 18, went to the 16 and modified it in many ways as I thought it would be my last. THEN when Danny built his car and we started traveling everywhere in two trucks with two trailers, 1/2 the fun was gone.. We weren't together traveling. THAT is why I sold my 16 to Lee and bought one that I could put both cars in. NOW, we split the cost of fuel, we get to spend QUALITY time together, AND, I have my mechanic with me everywhere I go :)!!!! Great advise Big Bill.

Rolla,

The roofline of the stacker trailer would match in height the roofline of a motorhome and at just 22' would be legal in all states for overall length. Just something to think about, you could still run with your friend with his ride too, even in a long motorhome.

Just be aware of low overheads, such as railroad bridges that have a clearance of say 14'. Myself, I'd very leery of trailering anything that stuck up that high. Motor homes are not any taller than 12 feet...at least the class A's that I have looked at.

Lugnut,

I think it is a perspective that the stackers that are short look taller than a motorhome. Your correct, about the tallest motorhome comes in a 12' 6", most are 12'. The stacker auto transport trailers run at 12' max.
