carburators

Post by isaltz »

WOW i know this is opinions but that is what im looking for, i want a street driveable car, i want to be able to get in and crank it up and go where ever i want, im not a mechanic, i dont want to have to keep adjusting or changing things. now with that said, when i buy my crate motor, which would be your carb of choice? Holly or Edelbrock? i have heard people say holly's are great for racing but edelbrock are better for street? im looking for opinions from people who are on the street with same type of engines and cars, i hope to hear from you guys soon.

Hi,
You didn't say what crate motor that you bought. I think that your best bet for good street performance and reliably I would go with the Edelbrock Street package, manifold, carb. etc. Don't go too big on the carburetor use a recommended size for your cubic inches (600 cfm or 650 cfm for a 350 inch motor). Of course, I'm sure that you are going to receive numerous ideas on this, but I have found for the street this seems to work. Good luck.

thanks harry, i did forget that, its between the 355 with the 650 cfm but most likely it will be a blue print 383 stroker that will come with the 700cfm. the engine comes with edelbrock manifold but i think im gonna put the air gap manifold on it. other than that, thats my choice, they told me it came with a holly but im leaning toward the edelbrock. thanks for your imput

I would run a 600 Edelbrock on a 350 and a 750 on a 383.

I have used Edelbrocks on daily drivers and once I have gotten the metering rods and jets right, they have been set and forget. I do run a Holley fuel pressure regulator on them set to 5 PSI. That's the pressure that Edelbrock recommends.

You might also look into the new Street Demon carbs. I haven't tried one, but they are supposed to have better fuel boosters and small primaries. This should give better throttle response and maybe even better mileage. They have large secondaries to get the CFM numbers, but will still fit on regular manifolds.

I would reconsider the Air Gap manifold. Carb intake systems are "wet flow" and to get good throttle response and fuel vaporization on the street, you actually need a little heat in the manifold. Heat in the manifold helps to keep the atomized fuel in vapor form and not condense on the cold manifold walls and floor. The air gaps give good dyno numbers and no doubt give lower ET's on the strip at wide open throttle, but on a T with the engine in the wind I would worry about low speed street manners due to a cold manifold. This is one reason (there are others) that tunnel rams can be difficult to set up. Of course none of this takes into consideration the "looks" factor, which is more important to some folks on a bucket.

I'm basing all this on your desire to have a no hassle system with good street manners.

thanks mike, the air gap theory makes sense, i am not putting it on the strip and that part wasnt for looks it was for keeping fuel cooler but what you said makes sense, those were the two carbs i was going to go with, the 750 was recomended for the 383 but as in my first ? i wanted to know which one was more driveable (street manners) as you put it. thanks for your reply, i appreciate it

I have a BluePrint 383 with an air gap manifold and a 750 Edelbrock. Once I replaced a faulty harmonic dampener and added the MSD with a box, it came ALIVE! My only problem has been leaning it out - it runs rich and this may be due to the manifold. I will be interested top hear comments from other people who may have a similar setup.

thanks allen, that is the engine i plan on getting, can u tell me what gears you are running and what type of milage do you get, just curious? where did you purchase your engine from? i was looking at getting it from jegs, but do all the blue print engines come from the same place? so does it matter where you buy it, other than who will give u the best deal?

I bought my engine thru Summit and I must tell you, I had some problems with the engine but both Summit and BluePrint stepped up to the plate - BIG TIME! (turns out the problem was a defective harmonic balancer but that is another story!) The after sale support can not be matched. BluePrint is located in Kearney Nebraska and their operation has another name associated with it in addition to "BluePrint". Don't remember the other name but I do know that Fat Pat knows!

As far as gears and mileage - I am running a very high final gear ratio - turning 2000 rpm at 70 mph with a pair of big Mickey's on the rear ( that is ANOTHER story for another time!!). Re mileage - bout 10 right now around town - much better on the highway. like I said, I still don't think I have it leaned out as much as it should be.

Hope this helps;

wow allen so many ?s come to mind, do u have a stall speed converter? if so how high? does it slip at all at that rpm on highway? 10 does sound low even for that motor. i will contact summit and check out thier prices, jegs has been realy good so far with what ive ordered. pep boys here in baton rouge, told me they would match the prices, so if i want to buy it local i can, im considering that also. thanks again

Yes I do have a stall convertor but I don't remember its specs. Jegs - Summit - both great to deal with. Summit is is Akron and Jegs is in Columbus.
